Roles now carry regions, so members filter to what is reachable.
Precise locations attach states, provinces and regions to roles, not just a country and a town. Members can then filter opportunities by region within their country, and the locations list narrows to match. Alumni networks and training providers stop showing people work they could never realistically take.
What precise locations changed
Location was the filter most likely to leave a member staring at a list that was technically correct and practically useless. A national board with a thousand roles is not a job board, it is a haystack.
- Roles can be linked to more specific locations, including states, provinces and regions.
- Members filter opportunities by region within their country, above the level of individual towns.
- The locations filter updates dynamically to show only the locations inside the region selected.
- Profile, company and role forms show localised examples for your country, so the fields make sense wherever you are.
- Imported roles extract more precise location data as they arrive.
- Existing roles were upgraded behind the scenes, so location quality improved across boards that were already running.
That last point matters more than it sounds. The improvement applied to roles already on boards, rather than only to whatever arrived afterwards.
What it means for your community
Distance is the quiet reason people stop applying. Someone will scroll past three roles that are wrong for geography before they conclude the board is not for them, and they rarely tell you that is why.
An alumni network feels this most sharply, because alumni scatter after graduation and the institution has no visibility into where. A national list serves nobody in particular. Being able to pick a region and see the locations inside it means a graduate in the north west is looking at work in the north west, and the hub becomes worth opening again next week.
A training provider running regional cohorts has a sharper version of the same problem. Learners on a programme in one city are usually looking for work within commuting distance of it, and placement rate depends on that being realistic. Roles carrying a region rather than a bare country name is the difference between a match a learner acts on and one they dismiss.
What it means for your team
Less manual correction. Because imported roles extract better location data as they arrive, admins spend less time fixing listings that came in with a country and nothing else, and the localised form examples mean colleagues entering roles by hand are prompted with formats that make sense for where they are.
It also makes the filtered links you send out much sharper. A region-filtered view is a genuinely useful thing to put in a cohort email, and those filtered links carry their state in the URL, so one link per region is easy to maintain. Where roles arrive through the automated job stream, the same location data is extracted on the way in.
There is a reporting benefit too. Once roles carry a region rather than a country, the gap between where your members are and where the work is becomes visible rather than anecdotal. If a cohort in one region is applying far less than the others, that is usually a supply problem in that region rather than a motivation problem in that cohort, and it points at a job stream scope worth widening.
For organisations running separate boards per region or programme, the same data makes each board genuinely distinct rather than a national list with a different logo on it, which is what makes a per-region board worth running at all.
Do members need to update their profile?
No. The region filter works on the roles themselves, so members can use it straight away without touching anything. Adding a country to a basic profile does help matching relevance more generally, and members are prompted for it, but the filtering described here does not depend on it. Existing roles were upgraded automatically, so boards that had been running for months got the benefit without an admin re-entering anything.
Getting started
Nothing needs switching on. The region filter appears on your board, and location fields on the role form now accept the more specific values with examples matched to your country. The marketplace admin guide shows the filter rail in context and the knowledge base covers role fields. The change is recorded in the precise locations changelog entry.
