Role access controls make your job board a real member benefit

Require membership to view a role, and stop listings being copied.

Role access controls decide who can see a role and what they can do with it once they have. Companies set defaults, role managers override them per role, and the same eligibility check runs on every route into an application. Associations and alumni networks get exclusivity that holds up rather than exclusivity in name only.

What role access controls cover

A private board is only private if the roles inside it are too. The controls close the gap between the board's access model and the individual listings, which is where exclusivity usually leaks.

  • Require board membership to view a role, so someone outside the role's boards cannot view or apply even holding the URL.
  • Disable copying of role details and disable printing, to stop content being reproduced elsewhere.
  • Set defaults at company level, with per-role overrides for role managers who need them.
  • Post roles to our boards only, a companion setting that keeps a company's roles inside its own network by default.
  • The eligibility check runs on every apply route, not just the obvious one.

Someone without access sees a clear explanation and a sign-in path back to the role, rather than something that looks like a broken page.

What it means for your community

Members joined for something they cannot get elsewhere. If the roles are visible to anyone with a link, that reason quietly evaporates, and it is the kind of erosion nobody reports because nobody notices it happening.

A professional association is the clearest case. Members expect tangible career value from their subscription, and a niche vacancy that turns up on a public aggregator two days later is an argument against renewing. Requiring membership to view restricted roles means the board stays a reason to hold a membership card. It also changes what employers are willing to list, because a role placed in front of a vetted professional community is a different proposition from one broadcast everywhere.

Alumni networks and career services have the same shape with different stakes. Alumni scatter across public boards where the institution has no visibility and no way to help. A private hub only earns its place if what is inside it is genuinely not available elsewhere, and the copying and printing controls matter here because the leak is rarely malicious. It is usually a helpful member forwarding a listing to a friend.

What it means for your team

The defaults do most of the work. Set the company-level position once and every new role inherits it, so exclusivity does not depend on whoever posts a role remembering to tick a box. Role managers who genuinely need a public listing can still override per role.

It also makes the conversation with employers easier. Being able to say a role will only be seen by members of a defined community, and to demonstrate that the platform enforces it on every apply route, is a concrete commitment rather than a promise. Where that supply is arriving on its own through the automated job stream, the access rules apply to those roles too.

Access models sit alongside this. Boards can be public, private or invitation only, and the access controls layer on top of whichever you have chosen rather than replacing it.

What happens if someone shares a restricted link?

They see a membership advisory explaining why they cannot view it, with a route to sign in if they do have an account. They cannot view the detail and they cannot apply, because the check runs at the point of application rather than only at the point of display. The link is not broken, it is simply not for them, and the person who shared it is not left looking as though they sent a dead URL.

Getting started

Access defaults are in Manage Company, and per-role overrides appear when posting or editing a role. The marketplace admin guide covers the settings screen by screen and the knowledge base answers the common questions about membership and visibility. Both changes are recorded in the role access changelog entry.

If exclusivity is central to your model, the job board for associations and job board for alumni networks pages go further into access models and membership. Spacewalk runs a 14-day free trial with no credit card required, and a board goes live in about an hour.
